Bill Ritchie Special Interactive Printmaking Demo with DVD of his 1977 interview with Dan Smith and Pulling Prints off his Halfwood Press at the Seattle DANIEL SMITH Store
Last Saturdays’ Special demo at the DANIEL SMITH Seattle Store with Multimedia Artist Bill Ritchie: was such a interesting experience on many levels.

Bill Ritchie inking up his copper plate for the Interactive Printmaking Demo
Bill told us that Dan Smith made the small batches of etching and litho inks and gave them to some UW printmaking students (Dan taught litho at UW in 1976) to test out in their work. In the video when talking about one of the reasons why he began making inks, Dan says, “I’m into making perfect materials“. A couple of other phrases really caught my attention; “One of my most favorite pigments is Lamp Black” and Dan goes on to explain why (incredibly rich color) as well as some background info on Lamp Black. Later Dan makes a really poignant comment that I know many Artists also feel, “I don’t know how to make Art a bigger part of the world.“ I hope you have an opportunity to watch the video (now DVD) someday, it’s very interesting to watch what was originally a student assignment interview of someone who eventually turned his passion for making the BEST Art Materials for Artists into the Art business we know as DANIEL SMITH: Artists’ Materials. And today that passion still continues to make the highest quality Artists Inks and Paints in the world!

Surprise! Listening to the music box feature on Bill Ritchie's Mini Halfwood Press
Bills’ demo set up added another level of interest because his handcrafted “Halfwood Presses” were amazing sculptures on their own. The photos on line do not do them justice, they are exquisitely detailed, and while working presses, they look as if they should be on display. Bill brought his personal Mini Halfwood Press as a display which has a couple of unique and charming features. The first was a clock embedded in the fine woodwork, and the second….well it has a music box mechanism in it and Bill surprised and charmed several DS store staff when it began playing!

Bill Ritchie pulling his 3rd Commemorative Print of his Dan Smith 1977 video interview
For the part of the demo where Bill was pulling intaglio prints, inked in DANIEL SMITH etching ink, off the copper plate, he used a brand new, never-been-used press (#49) to test it before sending off to it’s new owner in Australia. So not only was Bill debuting press #49, he was also pulling prints off a plate he made to commemorate his DVD of Dan Smith that he had not printed from before….pure performance! Bill believes printmaking is a performance art and this demo was absolutely a performance. I hope you get a chance to see his Interactive Printmaking FREE Demo this Sunday at the Bellevue DANIEL SMITH Store:

Kirkland Artist Studio Tour Art Show at the DANIEL SMITH Gallery
Last night was our Artist Reception for the Kirkland Artist Studio Tour Artists at the DANIEL SMITH Gallery. I chatted with a couple of the Artists, Wendy Leteste and Linda Lee Foster, and briefly met Sawatou Mouratidou and Elaine Moore. Towards the end, I talked a bit with Tara Shadduck from the Kirkland Arts Center, and Myra Kaha who is the Education Director at the Center which is the organization behind the Kirkland Artist Studio Tour. It was great to see the Art, fun to meet the Artists, and everyone seemed to enjoy the Reception!

The Pastel "Try It" Table near the Pastel Aisle at the Seattle DANIEL SMITH Store for the Annual Spring Pastel Event
Our Annual DANIEL SMITH Stores’ Spring Pastel Weekend Event arrived this past weekend. Not only did we finally have beautiful Spring Day here in Seattle, there was lots to watch and learn at our all of our many FREE demos , and to try at our Pastel “Try It” tables all weekend long!

Barbara VanDyke-Shuman Pastel Demo at the Annual Spring Pastel Event at DANIEL SMITH
Barbara likes to work in Plein Aire when she can, so she usually works at an easel. TIP Here: when working on an easel, Barbara has made an inexpensive pastel tray to catch the pastel dust by folding a mat board into a tray. She scores the mat board a couple of inches from the bottom, then scores it again on the same side the width of her easel tray area. Barbara then bends at the first score to a 90 degree angle, then at the second score also with a 90 degree angle with the major part of the mat board upright. Then she lays the mat board in her easel tray so that she can now rest her pastel panel in the mat board tray on her easel. The now cupped shaped mat board collects the pastel dust for easier clean up.

Sennelier Pastels on display at the DANIEL SMITH Stores
This weekend is our Annual Spring Pastel Event at both the Seattle and Bellevue DANIEL SMITH stores! So You are invited to come by our stores for FREE demos by Artists’ showing you how they create their Art in Pastels, and you can give pastels a try at the special tables step up in the stores too.
For everyone who works with GOLDEN Acrylics , Acrylic paint in general, and Oil paint may want to come to the Early Bird (9:30am) FREE demo at the Seattle DANIEL SMITH Store on the New GOLDEN OPEN Acrylics. GOLDEN’s very knowledgeable representative, Nina Deckert will be there to “Show and Tell” all about this new really cool product….there will be some FREE goodies (samples!) of this revolutionary new acrylic paint!
Since DANIEL SMITH will be carrying the entire line of the New OPEN Acrylics (look for them on page 42 of the new 2008-2009 Reference Catalog) Nina has been holding training sessions this week with the DANIEL SMITH store and catalog people. Nina will be offering some of the same information at this FREE demo!
What’s so new and wonderful about the new GOLDEN OPEN Acrylics? Well they have a much, much longer open time to work with. This is a totally new formula (and top secret too!) for acrylics that allows artists extended time to work with the paint…almost like an oil paint. The paint feels luscious and silky, again like an oil paint, when you apply it to your surface. The paint does not skim over as there is a humectant in the formula to attract moisture from the air helping to extend the open time. You can mix and work over the surface with blending, more like painting in oils, but with no solvents!
The new GOLDEN OPEN Acrylics clean out of brushes really well with water, and are designed to mix with GOLDEN’s Heavy Body Acrylics (and other brands including DANIEL SMITH Ultimate Acrylics ) which, depending on the amount of OPEN Acrylic mixed in will extend the working time of the mixed color. There is lots more, so come by to find out more from Nina at the Special Event this Saturday at 9:30 am! Remember there will be a cool package with 3 samples of GOLDEN OPEN Acrylic!
Thank you Nina!

at the DANIEL SMITH Bellevue Store
Saturday, May 10th at 11 am & 1:45 pm
Last weekend was the Spring Pastel Event at the DANIEL SMITH Stores in both Seattle and Bellevue. Out of the several Events and FREE demos scheduled, I was able to attend the FREE Pastel demo on Saturday, with Mary Shea, at the DANIEL SMITH Seattle Store.
Mary Shea works primarily in pastel and some printmaking (monotypes) and for the pastel demo, Mary shared with us some of her techniques and her enthusiasm for making and experimenting with different art processes. Playfulness is an important part of Mary’s art, and it shows in her enthusiasm for her art materials and willingness to experiment….”it’s always worth it to try!”
For the demonstration, Mary used Sennelier Pastels and we each got some free Sennelier Pastel samples!
Because “I get a little frustrated sometimes on white paper”, Mary told us that she likes to work on Cason Mi-Tientes pastel paper [ "working on a black background really makes the colors sing" ] and do watercolor blocking on paper and monotypes, then drawing on top with pastel. Other papers that Mary likes to work with in pastel are printmaking paper (ones that have good “tooth” for the pastel to grab on to) and heavy handmade papers .
It was a fun hour to hear Mary Shea share her passion and enthusiasm for drawing and painting with pastels, thank you Mary!
