In addition to the regular FREE weekend Art demos, this Saturday the Seattle DANIEL SMITH Store will have a very Special Interactive Printmaking Session with Artist Bill Ritchie. 

 Bill Ritchie has this posted on his website:

 ”‘My plan is to give a background of the DVD we made in the 1970s, then play the DVD. While it’s playing, I’ll quietly print an etching I made, titled Portrait of Daniel Smith - using ink made by Daniel Smith, Inc. and on a Halfwood Press I designed.’- Bill Ritchie”  

Bill also has a 2 1/2 minuet trailer from his DVD of his fascinating 1977 interview with Daniel Smith and making Printmaking Ink posted on his website.  At Bill’s demo, he will be playing the complete DVD while he pulls some prints.  This Special demo is from 11am to 1pm.  We are very excited to have Bill at the Seattle Store this weekend and the Bellevue Store July 26th, so please come and join us for this Special Event! 

Saturday, July 18th, we will also have two FREE demos at 1 and 3pm with Artist Dan Riley on “How to Figure Draw in Watercolor“.  Dan is an Artist who is all about the drawing, and writes this on his website: “I love a good line. The capture of a look, a gesture or an emotion with the simplicity of a clean line is almost magical to me.”  Come and learn more from Dan on figure drawing in Watercolor. 

Sunday, July 19th, Cal Capener will be demonstrating how he paints in oils, landscapes.  This demo is at a special time from 12 to 2pm while Cal paints a landscape in oils so you can watch while he paints and ask questions.

This weekend at the Bellevue DANIEL SMITH Store we are having something a little different for our FREE Demos.  On Saturday learn how to work with Encaustic Paints when John Vandebrooke shows you the basics of how to do “European Style Wax Painting”.  If you don’t know much, or anything about Encaustic Painting, then this is demo will introduce you to Encaustic Paints.  Like Oil painting but don’t care to work with turpentine or paint thinners?  Well, Bruce Edwards will show you how to work with Water Soluble Oil Paints on Sunday.

Earlier this morning, Natalie Oswald demonstrated painting on Ampersand panels at the Seattle DANIEL SMITH store.  This was a single 2 hour demo from 10am to Noon.  Natalie worked with both acrylic paint and oil paint on the prepared, and ready-to-paint surfaces of Ampersand Gessobord.  The ready-to-paint surface of all the Ampersand Bord products makes it ideal to have on hand when inspriration strikes!

 
Natalie worked over the surface of the Gessobord in her particular style which invloves layering background acrylic paint in different colors (sometimes very bright!) often using custom stamps she has made (usually out of Safety-Kut blocks) to get a wall paper effect before painting her subject in oil. 
 
Natalie will apply washes of acrylic paint thinned with acrylic medium to tone down colors and told the audience that she has on occassion, gone back and sanded down part of the surface to expose some of the colors painted earlier.  Almost a geologic process of laying down color and sometimes exposing the ealier colors when she erodes the surface with sandpaper. 
 
For the demo, Natalie painted two birds interacting in flight in Sepia oil paint as an underpainting for her subject.  These birds were painted on top of the background of a decoratively stamped design that Natalies had done earlier.  Later, when the sepia color has dried, Natalie will finish painting the birds in oil paint.
 
Natalie has found that for her, painting a decorative underpainting in acrylic on the Ampersand Gessobord helps take away the paralysis of “The Blank Page”, and her recent work has all been done this way.

FREE Oil Painting demonstrations this weekend at the Bellevue DANIEL SMITH Store. This is a great way to Pick up some new oil painting tips, learn more about painting in oils , or just inspire you!

Saturday will be with Oil Painter Michele Usibelli and Impressionistic oil painting. Michele will be sharing some of the basic Impressionistic painting techniques she uses in her own paintings .
