New Revere Papers from Cartiera Magnani now available at DANIEL SMITH: Artists' Materials

Some of the exciting new art supply items we have new in our DANIEL SMITH 2009-2010 Referance Catalog are Revere Papers from Cartiera Magnani. These fine art papers are new this Summer from the Cartiera Magnani paper mills in Pescia Italy:

Bonjour Sennelier Acrylique!

Sennelier, with their history and tradition of making high quality Art Materials (pastels & oils) has now made an entrance into the Acrylic Paint world with their new Sennelier Acrylique Paints. The paints have only just been made available to the U.S. this summer, and DANIEL SMITH is one of the first to offer them in our new DANIEL SMITH 2009-2010 Reference Catalog.

The Sennelier Marketing for their new Acrylique shows an acrylic painting of a fanciful, luscious pink fruit “sundae” on top of a chocolate eclair with clouds of whipped cream topped with a cherry…..mmmmm. It really helps to make the impression of how lusciously creamy their new Acrylique Paints are. Senneliers’ goal was to emulate the creamy feel of their oil paints, which will certainly appeal to oil painters who are interested in making the switch to acrylics while still keeping the “buttery” feel of oil paint.

Sennelier selected their 110 Acrylique paint colors from their Sennelier oil paint colors (145 pigments) plus 4 Interference colors and 6 Iridescent colors. DANIEL SMITH is carrying the entire 120 Acrylique paint color selection.

New Yuze Chiyogami Papers Now Available at DANIEL SMITH: Artists’ Materials

In our new DANIEL SMITH 2009-2010 Reference Catalog we have 15 new patterns of Yuzen Chiyogami papers for you to use in your Art projects.

Historically these lovely patterns were painstakingly carved onto multiple woodblocks, one for each color, and hand printed onto fabric for kimonos, or onto paper for paper dolls or small paper boxes. Today, the brilliant colors are silkscreened, each color separately, onto strong kozo/sulphite paper with crisp detailed patterns making the gorgeous papers. These lush papers can be used for bookbinding, gift wrap, collage, lampshades, origami, card-making, framing, scrapbooking, or wherever your artistic expression leads you!

Tip – if you collage the paper onto a lampshade, use DANIEL SMITH Acrylic Medium in Gloss or Matte to apply the papers to the outside surface of the lampshade.

Introducing Canson Infinity Digital Fine Art Reproduction Papers: Now at DANIEL SMITH

Canson Infinity Inkjet Digital Fine Art Papers

This past last week of July in preparation for our new DANIEL SMITH 2009-2010 Reference Catalog, we had product training with Reps from Canson to show us their new Canson Infinity Papers: the “Best Paper now becomes the Best Inkjet Receptive Paper“.

These Canson Infinity Inkjet Fine Art and Photographic Papers have recently been developed (over a period of several years) for “Technical Excellence” in Archival Fine Art Reproductions. Canson has developed these Digital Art Papers using their famous archival printmaking paper (Rives BFK & Etching Rag), watercolor papers (Arches Aquarelle & Montval Aquarelle), pastel paper (Mi-Teintes) and a new Photographic Rag paper as the base for their Inkjet papers.

It’s important to know that when you use these Digital Art papers you are using the SAME paper that Canson has been making for years, sometimes hundreds of years (the original company began making paper in 1492) for Artists. So the Digital Arches Aquarelle Rag is the same as the watercolor paper and so on. The Canson Infinity comes in:

We originally offered our DANIEL SMITH ExtraFine Watercolor Sticks as a set of six colors: Hansa Yellow medium, Quinacridone Coral, Sap Green, French Ultramarine Blue, Burnt Umber and Quinacridone Burnt Orange.

Last Sundays’ Special “Hands On” Event Featuring DANIEL SMITH ExtraFine Watercolor Sticks with Annie Van Engelen

There was a time machine at the DANIEL SMITH Seattle Store yesterday when Annie Van Engelen was conducting a “Hands On” special event & demo for the new DANIEL SMITH ExtraFine Watercolor Sticks …that took everyone back to kindergarten!

The new DS Watercolor Sticks seem to bring out the playfulness in people when using them, and there was a cheerful, sense of fun when everyone began playing with the Watercolor Sticks. People were at the tables with paper trying out the various techniques that Annie had shown and talked about at the beginning of the demo.

I moved around from table to table chatting with different people about what they were finding interesting about painting/drawing with the Watercolor Sticks. They were trying out different watercolor brushes such as the Niji Waterbrush (a hit!) and on different watercolor papers like Yupo. I saw a wide range of fun, expressive artwork that people were creating while playing around with the DANIEL SMITH ExtraFine Watercolor Sticks…yep, everyone was playing like they were kids again making Art!

Introducing DANIEL SMITH ExtraFine Watercolor Sticks!

Our new DANIEL SMITH ExtraFine Watercolor Sticks are very portable and are a great alternative solution to tube watercolor paints. These are made with the same high quality pigments as our regular DANIEL SMITH ExtraFine Watercolors and with just enough gum Arabic to form the pigment into a solid, easy to hold, stick.

To introduce them, we have them in a 6 stick pack for $68.95. The colors are: Hansa Yellow Medium, Quinacridone Coral, Sap Green, French Ultramarine, Burnt Umber, and Quinacridone Burnt Orange.

You can make very expressive lines when you “draw” with the Watercolor Sticks, then using your wet watercolor brush dissolve the line into color with your brushwork. You can apply the Watercolor Sticks to wet or dry paper for different effects. Wetting the end of the watercolor sticks and drawing directly onto your paper makes a different line, and you can take up color onto your watercolor brush by drawing it across the the tip of the wet Watercolor Stick. The Watercolor Stick can be used on your palette by dissolving a bit off the tip in water from your palette’s well, and…..?

There are very likely more wonderful ways you can paint with our new Watercolor Sticks…just take some time and remember to play with your DANIEL SMITH Watercolor Sticks!

Training For Our New DANIEL SMITH Summer Sale Catalog

The new DANIEL SMITH Summer Sale Catalog has been mailed out and you should be receiving it very soon if you haven’t already gotten it. To be ready for your questions about new products in this catalog, we had training sessions last week for the DANIEL SMITH Call Center and DANIEL SMITH Store sales people. Our trainers, Thom Wright and artist Jennifer Phillips did a great job filling everyone in on the benefits of the new products so we could pass them on to you, and pointed out the terrific values of the items that are now ON SALE for you!

There are a couple of new DANIEL SMITH Paints being introduced in this catalog. Two new DANIEL SMITH Extra Fine Watercolors: Smalt Genuine and Perylene Violet (everyone attending got tubes to play with!) a very beautiful blue and a juicy reddish violet on page 3. Also, a new DANIEL SMITH Original Oil Paint: Cadmium Red Medium Hue ” offers an “alternative to classic Cadmium Red. It’s a vibrant, strong primary red…an organic color, it has high chroma and strong opacity”, on page 23.

A couple of other things that caught my eye during the training session I attended. The first was the new Atria Stainless Steel Brush Washers in three sizes on page 59, they are airtight to prevent odors and spills. The other was the new A-Frame Studio Easel on page 95. which has a wood tray to brace the legs and provides some storage, and tilts both forward and back.
