Tulips and Barns at Skagit Valley Tulip Festival

Tulips and Barns at Skagit Valley Tulip Festival

Hello Spring!  Big sunshiny smile for the vernal equinox which happened at 10:32 this morning here in the Pacific Northwest, and we are having sun with temps in the high 60’s (amazing!) ….a glorious day!

Spring is here now and let the Plein Air Painting festivities begin!  So I am wondering how many of you are planning on spending some time outside this fine Spring weekend?  Anyone taking their paints-to-go with them on an outdoor adventure today or tomorrow?  If you are, what’s on your palette?

DANIEL SMITH sign with Mt Rainier bathed in Alpenglow pink to the right of the sign

Yesterday’s blog post was about Kristina Hagman’s show: “36 Views of Mt Rainier” and her capturing in expressive woodblock prints, how Mt Rainier is always part of the landscape for those living in Seattle and the Puget Sound.  You see Mt Rainier framed by “where-you-are-right-now” and it’s always present like the sky….

Well…Mt Rainier also watches over our DANIEL SMITH Art Supply building in the SODO neighborhood of Seattle….

I took these photos later the same day that I had met Kristina at Kinsey Gallery, so Mt Rainier was on my mind as I was leaving my office at DANIEL SMITH, driving south over the bridge above DANIEL SMITH, and there it was….Mt Rainier!

Mt Rainier was glowing pink bathed in the alpenglow of the setting sun on Friday March 5th.  You can see it above the roof of the DANIEL SMITH building and at the base of our sign:  DANIEL SMITH: Artists’ Materials…you can just make it out – Mt Rainier!

It was so beautiful, I had to stop and take some photos to share with you!

DANIEL SMITH: Artists' Materials

DANIEL SMITH: Artists' Materials

While watching the Oscars this evening, one acceptance speech really stood out from all the fanfare, fashion, glitz and glamour.  Michael Giacchino, who just won an Oscar for Achievement in music written for motion pictures (Original score) for the movie “Up“,  wrapped up his acceptance speech with:

If you want to be creative, get out there and do it. It’s not a waste of time”

Those words really caught my attention because the pursuit of creative expression is so intriguing.  To keep at it over time to draw, paint, print, sculpt, et cetera knowing in your heart that “It’s not a waste of time” to keep creating is a real leap of faith.  I admire the perseverance of Artists who are very likely to run up against the “waste of time” opinion since creative expression tends to be valued less than other pursuits.

So I want to thank the Members of our Artist Community for Creating Art, remember…“ It’s not a waste of time!

Happy New Year!!

Happy New Year!!

Happy New Year Artists, from everyone here at DANIEL SMITH: Artists Materials!!

It’s a New Year…a New Decade and time for New Year’s resolutions.

Last weekend I posed this question on our DANIEL SMITH Facebook page:
“Hello Artists, it’s nearly 2010, what Art resolutions are you planning on making for the New Year?”  and as I write this post, 33 Artists have left comments about their Art Resolutions….feel free to leave yours there or here too!

It is wonderful to see how “resolute” you Artists are to make Art in the New Year:  To improve your skills, to learn a new medium, to sell more Art, to make creating Art more of a priority, to make Art everyday, to paint outdoors, to relax and paint more, to connecting with a Gallery, meet more Artist friends, to go to school to study Art, sketch everyday, paint everyday, participate in Art Fairs, get on Etsy, and as an Artist commented; “Paint, paint, paint….”

Having a fresh new start, with goals for making Art is important to keep moving forward and growing as Artists, how exciting is the potential that the New Year brings!

Happy New Year Artists!

A “Toast” to everyone in the Art Community for a creative and successful year together in 2010!   *clink*   :  )

Seattle DANIEL SMITH Store on snowy evening a few days before Christmas.

Seattle DANIEL SMITH Store on snowy evening a few days before Christmas.

We have been having a lot of snow this December and I thought you all might enjoy seeing a photo I took yesterday at dusk of the DANIEL SMITH Seattle Store.

The Store is sandwiched between the DANIEL SMITH Corporate offices and the DANIEL SMITH Manufacturing Facilities where our paints are made.

I love how the light glows in the cold of the snowy evening!
