Black Tourmaline Genuine Watercolor by DANIEL SMITH

Black Tourmaline Genuine Watercolor by DANIEL SMITH

***
*  DANIEL SMITH Black Tourmaline Genuine Extra Fine Watercolor [ The Best Watercolor ] is part of our PrimaTek collection of straight-from-the-earth mineral pigments and was introduced February 2009.
***

Black Tourmaline, a type of Tourmaline called “Schorl”, is a crystalline semi-precious black gemstone, which is a very unusual color in gemstones, and you can see a piece of it in the video below.

***
Our Black Tourmaline Genuine is a warm black, and has a slightly different combination of properties compared with our other black watercolors, which are all are extremely permanent:
Black Tourmaline: transparent, non-staining and granulating.
Ivory Black: semi-transparent, low staining and granulating
Lamp Black: opaque, staining, and non-granulating
Lunar Black: transparent, low staining, and granulating

Black Tourmaline Genuine is black in mass tone (straight from the tube) and warm grays in washes with wonderful granulation.  That granulation may be apparent even when mixed with other colors, very nice if you want some granulating effects when mixed with a non-granulating watercolor

Melinda Hannah "Portraits Painted with DANIEL SMITH PrimaTek Watercolors" Demo

Melinda Hannah "Portraits Painted with DANIEL SMITH PrimaTek Watercolors" Demo

Recently for a Special FREE Friday Demo at the DANIEL SMITH Seattle Store, Melinda Hannah was demonstrating Portraits using DANIEL SMITH PrimaTek Watercolors.

This 3 hour demo we had scheduled in a “Hands On” period to work with the PrimaTek Watercolors in exercises that Melinda Hannah had suggested painting out….”Hearts“.

When she first suggested it I was thinking that hearts seemed a silly subject for an exercise, but I was game to support Melinda with it.  Well, was I surprised by the creative results - Great Idea Melinda!

"Hands On" painting PrimaTek Hearts with Melinda Hannah

"Hands On" painting PrimaTek Hearts with Melinda Hannah

Usually when people do paint outs to test color combinations they use a square or rectangle (maybe a circle or free-form) shape to apply their paint.  There is something inherently ridged about painting in some of those shapes, that dampens the creative process, you know….”keep inside the lines!”  Well, hearts are inherently an expressive shape and are fun to work with too.

Everyone began with tracing out the heart shape in pencil accross their paper and was the last of any formality….

Watching the hearts being painted out and seeing the colors blend in with one another, merging and producing beautiful painterly effects was almost magical.  There was no worry about keeping inside the lines of the penciled heart, in fact the painted outlines became expressive lines as people used them only as reference for fluid brush strokes.

Some of the combinations that were tried while I watched were Rhodonite Genuine (Rhodonite video), Serpentine Genuine, Zoisite Genuine, and
Bloodstone Genuine.  Melinda made suggestions of some color combinations to try, encouraged experimentation and sometimes called “STOP”, so that the hearts weren’t overworked loosing the cool effects.

Here are 9 plus 9 more Hearts I played around with over the weekend in this slide show.  I used the 4 PrimaTeks listed above plus: Amethyst Genuine, Hematite Genuine, and Jadeite Genuine.  FYI, in the slide show I mislabeled the last two hearts of the first 9, they are actually Rhodonite and Hematite, and Jadeite and Hematite.
YouTube Preview Image
I think this is a fun way (exercise) to get “unstuck” with creatively by playing with different color combinations in repeating heart shapes, sort of like a jazz musician doing jazz riffs to loosen up.,

Thanks Melinda for the demo and the fun “Hands On” exercise!

Rhodonite Genuine Watercolor by DANIEL SMITH

Rhodonite Genuine Watercolor by DANIEL SMITH

Today, I am spotlighting our DANIEL SMITH Extra Fine Watercolor – Rhodonite Genuine.

Rhodonite Genuine is part of our DANIEL SMITH Collection of PrimaTek Watercolors, which are paints made from minerals mined from the earth.

The name of the mineral Rhodonite comes from the Greek word for rose, rhodon, and was historically made into vases, platters and mantles in Russia.  It is now often used for jewelry and here at DANIEL SMITH we take jewelry quality stones and make them into Rhodonite Genuine Watercolor and Rhodonite Genuine Oil Paints.
YouTube Preview Image
As you can see in the video, Rhodonite Genuine is a beautiful rose pink ranging in color from very dark in the tube, to rich medium pink and on to sheer glowing pink.  Our Rhodonite Genuine has an excellent lightfast rating, is low staining with no granulation, and is a semi-transparent watercolor paint.

  • ASTM Lightfastness Rating: Excellent
  • Transparency: Semi-transparent
  • Staining: Low
  • Granulating: No

PrimaTek paints are made from minerals finely ground into pigments and mixed into paints.  Throughout history paints were made from naturally occurring minerals, and our PrimaTek paints continue that tradition.

Our Kyanite Genuine is made from Kyanite, the name is based on a Greek word for dark blue or blue enamel, and one of it’s many uses is as a gemstone.  At DANIEL SMITH, we use it to make one of our PrimaTek Watercolors.

Kyanite is a blue/gray crystalline mineral that when made into our Kyanite Genuine watercolor produces a beautiful granulating blue/gray that has a subtle shimmer from the mica when dry.

“When ground into pigment and dispersed in water, the darker blue colors granulate and sink into the paper. The lighter, sparkling mica settles on top of this granulated blue ground….  Wash this color over your paper with plenty of water for a multi-dimensional effect or use at full strength for metallic blue steel. Kyanite Genuine gives frost icicles and snow flakes a magic touch in your winter landscapes”

ASTM Lightfastness Rating: Excellent
Transparency: Transparent
Staining: Non-staining
Granulating: Yes

Kyanite Genuine also makes up part of our Winter Wonderland Watercolor Triad which also has Bloodstone Genuine (another PrimaTek) and Phthalo Green (YS).

DANIEL SMITH Winter Wonderland Watercolor Triad

DANIEL SMITH Winter Wonderland Watercolor Triad

It’s winter, and time to go “Walking in a Winter Wonderland”, artistically speaking, with DANIEL SMITH’s newest Watercolor Triad: Winter Wonderland!

Our Winter Wonderland Watercolor Triad has two of our DANIEL SMITH PrimaTek Watercolors and is made up of:

Kyanite Genuine (a PrimaTek), Bloodstone Genuine (a PrimaTek) and Phthalo Green (YS)  This Limited Time Only, DANIEL SMITH Watercolor Triad is an extra special value since it has two of our PrimaTek watercolors.  If you have been wondering about the PrimaTek watercolors, then this Triad would be a great one to add to your palette.

Winter Wonderland Kyanite Genuine, Made from the remarkable blue crystal that shares its name, this amazing PrimaTek pigment granulates in pockets of soft blue gray while a crystalline sparkle floats to the surface. Wash this color over your paper with plenty of water for a multi-dimensional effect or use at full strength for metallic blue steel. Kyanite Genuine gives frost icicles and snow flakes a magic touch in your winter landscapes.

Winter Wonderland Bloodstone Genuine, This PrimaTek’s pigment is made from the captivating red-dappled gemstone. In watercolor Bloodstone displays remarkable granulation and a rich, violet-umber hue. This textural neutral, with its soft mineral sheen, is the ideal earthtone for mountain crags peeking through snowcaps. Use it to add definition to your lanscapes with a range of values for shadows and shading.

Winter Wonderland Phthalo Green (YS), A clean, clear pure hue color that washes from deep rich, almost black green to a transparent bottle green. This beautiful color is great for mixing and maintains its depth. It is a staining pigment that creates luminous clean glazes.

Our Winter Wonderland Watercolor Triad is also one of our “Painting Project Triads” that you can download the triad design, transfer the image and paint it yourself.  Follow this link to the Winter Wonderland Painting Project.

We have two new videos for the Winter Wonderland Watercolor Triad.  The first is about “How To” paint the Winter Wonderland landscape, and the second is about the 3 colors and mixing them.

Susie Short "WATERCOLOR: Painting Water – Streams/Falls/Reflections" FREE Demo at the Seattle DANIEL SMITH Store

Susie Short "WATERCOLOR: Painting Water – Streams/Falls/Reflections" FREE Demo at the Seattle DANIEL SMITH Store

Last Saturdays’ FREE Watercolor demo at the Seattle DANIEL SMITH Store with Susie Short was jammed packed with lots of “Susie Tips” to an appreciative packed audience of watercolor painters wanting to learn how to “Paint Water – Streams/Falls/Reflections in Watercolor“.

The hour long demo (1 of 2) expanded an extra half hour longer to allow Susie to more time to share her tips and answer many questions.  Susie is a practical artist and teacher, so had lots of wonderful watercolor painting information to share.  Several of the questions were about Susie’s choices of watercolor brushes.  Susie likes relatively inexpensive brushes and she gave us many reasons (and showed us) why these brushes work so well for the painting she does: the DANIEL SMITH Platinum Series 23 Synthetic Multi-Media Brushes in round #10 & 12 and script #2, the Aquarelle Flat 3/4 brush and of course the Special “Susie Brush“!  Everyone was amazed at how versatile this brush is and the effects you can get from it and only $10.99, Susie paints most of her painting with this brush, from wetting the Arches 140lb Cold Press Watercolor paper she uses, to painting in her “shapes” and the special effects she gets from using a well worn brush.

Susie also shared some of her color mixes in particular her “rocks and tree trunk” formula: DANIEL SMTH Extra Fine Watercolors in Quinacridone Burnt Orange, French Ultramarine Blue and Quinacridone Violet.  Susie showed how beautifully these colors mix and the gorgeous colors that develop with different combinations.  Another color tip was how to make rich darks using DS Indanthrone Blue which is a pure navy.  DANIEL SMITH Indanthrone Blue is Susies substitution for Indigo which she finds dulls darks when mixed with other colors and as Susie says “Indanthrone darkens beautifully.”

A few things (of the many, many) that Susie told us during the demo:

I don’t really draw in first, I’m a shape painter….I paint a shape next to a shape, next to a shape.”
“Most PrimaTek granulates beautifully and is great for painting rocks.”
“I like Frabriano [Watercolor Paper for painting] flowers, I just find the Arches to be the best learning paper because it’s the most forgiving.”
“Most of the time I paint wet on wet, and kill the white, or a least most of it, then let it dry the paint wet on dry.”
“Often I paint my reflections first because I’m working wet on to wet, then the object is painted wet on dry and I don’t have to worry about the wet on wet image reflection moving if you painted the subject first.”

Susie will be doing another of the DANIEL SMITH FREE demos at the Bellevue Store on Saturday, July 18th at 11 am & 1:45 pm on the same watercolor topic: “Painting Water – Streams/Falls/Reflections” so if you missed this one, you have a second chance.

Thank you Susie!

Dave showing members of the Northwest Watercolor Society (NWWS) where on the map Purpurite Genuine comes from

Dave showing members of the Northwest Watercolor Society (NWWS) where on the map Purpurite Genuine comes from

Last Wednesday, 13 board members of the Northwest Watercolor Society visited the Seattle DANIEL SMITH Store to tour the on-site manufacturing facilities where the DANIEL SMITH Extra Fine Watercolors are made. The same manufacturing facilities are also where the DANIEL SMITH Original Oil Paint , DANIEL SMITH Ultimate Acrylic Paint , and DANIEL SMITH Printmaking Inks are made.

The tour was in four parts:

Since this was a VIP tour, it began with KT, Manager of the Bellevue DANIEL SMITH Store introducing John Cogley, owner of DANIEL SMITH, to the NWWS board-members. The group met at the front of the store where the video of “How Paint is Made – The DANIEL SMITH Way!” plays in the foyer of the Seattle Store. John talked to the NWWS group about what was happening on the video by explaining some of the processes, sharing stories and answering questions. It was really interesting to find out a few new things I had not previously learned before since John is very involved in the entire process beginning with being active in finding new minerals for DANIEL SMITH PrimaTek Paints .

David Pruneda, who works in the Seattle Store, took over for the next part of the tour by leading the group through the store to the room where the weekend FREE demos are held, it’s also used as a Gallery. The group took seats to listen to David talk about the minerals used for making DANIEL SMITH PrimaTek Colors by showing and passing around some of the corresponding minerals such as Azurite Genuine . There were “rocks”, and jars of powered minerals and examples of PrimaTek watercolors painted out on watercolor paper. There was also a map on display showing where some of the minerals come from…literally all over the world!

The next part of the tour was conducted by Ron Harmon, the long time DANIEL SMITH Chemist, who took us back into the manufacturing room. There Ron showed us the the 5 large to huge mixers that the pigments are mixed with the various liquids. Watercolor with Gum Arabic and water, Acrylic with acrylic emulsion, Oil with either safflower or linseed oil, and Lithographic ink with litho varnish. Next, are the various three roll mills that “take the pigment particles and tear them down” to transform the mixes into DANIEL SMITH paints and inks. While we were there, one of the mills was being used to refine DANIEL SMITH Quinacridone Gold Watercolor , so it was extra cool for the NWWS group to see. Lastly Ron lead the group over to see the two filling machines, one for watercolors and the other for acrylics, where the tubes of paint are filled. The inks are actually too thick for the fillers and the cans are hand filled beside the mills. Here is a trivia question for you…how are the labels applied to the tubes? Answer: by hand! Bonus answer: by Ron’s daughter’s hand!

Next, David lead the group back to the demo room to answer more questions…there is always so much to learn!

At the end of the tour, most of the group were amazed that while they “knew” that DANIEL SMITH manufactures its’ name brand paints and inks, they had not realized that the DANIEL SMITH Watercolors , Acrylics and Oil Paints and the Printmaking inks are actually made in the same building as the Seattle DANIEL SMITH Store.

Next time you are visiting the Seattle DANIEL SMITH Store to pick up more art supplies, just remember that a couple of walls over on the south side, is where the magic of COLOR for your paintings is made!

The tours are now resuming after a long hiatus, and DANIEL SMITH Manufacturing Tours are available by appointment for groups of up to 20.

Boardmembers of the Northwest Watercolor Society, thank you for coming, we were happy to see you, and show you how our DANIEL SMITH Extra Fine Watercolors are made!
