Artists Statement:

“I began this airport series two years ago because I wanted to include the figure in my work again.  I had a sketchbooks from a recent year in which I flew across the country at least five times and did a lot of waiting and drawing other people waiting in airports.  I used the sketchbook drawings as the starting point for these paintings and prints.”

“I like how airports look.  Even the windows and chairs, the long corridors and the vast spaces hold familiar emotions that I recognize when I start to draw.”

-Mary Shea 2010

Prior to writing, this I walked the gallery now hung with Mary’s lush and gorgeous paintings.  While enjoying the paintings, I was struck by how Mary has transformed what most would consider a mundane subject, the tiresome limbo of waiting at an airport, into one of expressive beauty.

The opening is this Saturday, and the show will be up through June 6th.

Next time you come to the Seattle Store, be sure to visit the Gallery!  The paintings can be viewed during regular store hours, except when the Gallery is being used for one of our scheduled workshops or demos.

"Shoot to Show: Assignment Bellevue" Bellevue College Instructor Ray Pfortner's Student Photography Show at the Bellevue DANIEL SMITH Gallery

"Shoot to Show: Assignment Bellevue" Bellevue College Instructor Ray Pfortner's Student Photography Show at the Bellevue DANIEL SMITH Gallery

Today is the official opening for the “Shoot to Show: Assignment Bellevue” Photo Show at the Bellevue DANIEL SMITH Store Gallery!  While the show has been up for about a week or so, the official Opening is Today, February 26th, 2010 from 4pm to 7pm and runs through March 15th.

Bellevue College Photography instructor Ray Pfortner has 16 of his students showing their work for “Shoot to Show: Assignment Bellevue”.  Ray Pfortner gave to his students this assignment during October and November 2009:
***

“Assignment: document Bellevue by photographing:
    -anything inside the official boundaries
-views looking in from outside those boundaries
-views looking out from within those boundaries

In addition to practicing photographing and camera settings and polishing visual literacy, a major focus was on the ins and outs of exhibiting visual art, from signing and editioning to framing, pricing and hanging. The hope is to empower each photographer to go on to hang many more shows of their own in th future, for to sell art your art must be seen.”

So for all you Bellevue DANIEL SMITH Customers, be sure to stop by for the Opening or any time until March 15th and check it out….you are sure to recognize the subject matter in these photos!

Bellevue DANIEL SMITH Store's 1st "Annual Customer Invitational Art Exhibit" March/April 2009

Bellevue DANIEL SMITH Store's 1st "Annual Customer Invitational Art Exhibit" March/April 2009

I have not had the chance to go to the Bellevue DANIEL SMITH Store in a while, but I did stop by today.  I really wanted to see the Art Exhibit that was going on in the Bellevue DANIEL SMITH Gallery (which also doubles as the FREE Demo, Workshop , and Life Drawing rooms).

The Art Exhibit is the 1st “Annual Customer Invitational Art Exhibit” that opened March 13th at the Bellevue DANIEL SMITH Store with a reception.  It was great to see the all the wonderful Art up on the walls for the Art Show, and see June (Asst Mgr.) who hung the show (looks great!) as well as Melinda and Michael who were helping Customers while I was there.
The store was busy since the Spring Cleaning Sale had just started, so I did not get to catch up too much, but I did take photos of the Exhibit to share with you here…  Enjoy!

Now on view in our DANIEL SMITH Art Gallery…. Our Employee Acrylic Art Show at the Seattle DANIEL SMITH Store! Next time you visit our Store, please stop by our Gallery to see what our talented DANIEL SMITH Artist Employees have created in Acrylic Paint.

There are lots of different techniques on display ranging from straight forward acrylic on canvas painted with brushes, to many forms of mixed media (photos, ink, pencil, Super Sculpey, Liquitex Pouring Medium , different kinds of Golden Gels , Styrofoam, even rice!) on different surfaces (Ampersand Gessobord with 2″ cradle , and other Ampersand Gessobords ). There were even a couple of paintings that used Golden Phosphorescent Green which is a glow-in-the-dark acrylic paint, and available at the DANIEL SMITH Stores.

Most of the paintings have artist labels with titles and mediums used to help viewers know what they are looking at. You just might get an idea or two for using different art materials from seeing these.

Last Friday, May 9th, the Bellevue DANIEL SMITH Store hosted an Artists Reception for members of the Northwest Watercolor Society whose paintings are hanging in the store this May for Watercolor Month .

The Reception for the NWWS Member Show was from 5:30 to 7:30 and held in the room (Gallery) where the weekend FREE demos are held and most of the paintings are hung. Hostess Supreme, Store Manager KT, was in her element making sure everyone was having a good time…there was food for the hungry and art for the soul!
I was unable to get there until a quarter of seven (I was with my clients until late) so I missed meeting most of the people attending and KT happily filled me in. I met a couple of lingering artists, Marianne Perkins (ink and watercolor: “Still Life in Seattle”) Adam Nichols (watercolor: “Surf Walk”) and later, Roger Baker (watercolor: “Morning Mist”)

Marianne, who will be doing one of the FREE demos this coming Sunday, May 18th, on “WATERCOLOR: Discovering the possibilites of walnut ink!” at the Bellevue DANIEL SMITH Store, was fun to talk to about the show.

Marianne helped with getting the show hung and tagged so had a funny story about a painting by Nadir Kianersi whose title “Not Finished Yet” caused a little confusion when Marianne was making the title cards. Every time Marianne called Nadir to find out the title of his painting, he told her “not finished yet” and Marianne thought he meant that the painting was “not yet finished” so made a title card with “Untitled” on it. Well, the painting was of a couple of unfinished Bellevue Skyscrapers and the descriptive title for it was…drum roll please!…”Not Yet Finished”!

This is really a good show and shows a wide range of water-based mediums, and subject matter. The show is up until May 28th and it’s worth a trip to the Bellevue DANIEL SMITH Store to check it out.
