Peacock by Natalie Oswald created using DANIEL SMITH Watercolor Sticks

Peacock by Natalie Oswald created using DANIEL SMITH Watercolor Sticks

In our DANIEL SMITH Summer Sale Catalog with “Reflecting” by Luke J. Tornatzky on the cover, we had an excellent article by Natalie Oswald with Tips on “How To” use the DANIEL SMITH Watercolor Sticks.  I am sharing that article here since right now that article is not available on the danielsmith.com site.

Like many artists, I am continuously looking for new and exciting materials to broaden my artistic horizons.  Although the staples in my studio always have their place, there is a unique inspiration that comes from trying a new technique of working in an entirely different medium.  Discoveries are made, new ways of seeing can develop and often the challenge is worth the reward of creating work that you might not otherwise have considered.  The new DANIEL SMITH Watercolor Sticks are a great way for painters to get back in touch with drawing or for artists who typically sketch to add painterly color.

They really are unlike any artists’ material I have used.  These handmade sticks look similar to a pastel; however, they are very solid and dense (they would be difficult to break or cut).  The are wrapped in a plastic label that keeps the sticks neat and clean during watercolor techniques.  The weight of the sticks and their dark, rich color let me know right away that these sticks were loaded with pure pigment.  To experiment, I chose subjects I am familiar with.  I often paint birds and decided to try a pheasant and peacock – two birds with bold color and dramatic markings.

Example 1

Example 1

For the peacock study I liberated my brush and focused on making marks with the sticks, only using brushwork for the finishing details and touches.  I started with a sheet of hot pressed watercolor paper stretched on a board and damped with a spray bottle.  Hot pressed paper is a nice surface for drawing with the sticks as the smooth surface allows the lines to flow.  I started my “drawing” by tapping Sap Green, French Ultramarine and Quinacridone Burnt Orange sticks to the wet paper anywhere I wanted to add color and value. Example 1

Example 2

Example 2

Keeping the paper damp really draws out the pigment and I worked fast to create an impression of the peacock with dots and dashes of color, adding some yellow to the back and Burnt Umber to the wings.  Watercolor Sticks have a very high pigment load and my drawing quickly became saturated with bold color.

After creating the shape of the bird, I added details with the sticks and, finally, a brush.  The spots of the peacock’s tail feathers were made by dipping the tops of the sticks into water and drawing “U” shapes, one color nested into another. Example 2

Example 3

Example 3

To add depth I applied Sap Green and French Ultramarine on the top of the tail, and then used my brush to draw down a more subtle wash of color toward the bottom.  I added detail to the head and beak by touching a wet brush to the stick and painting, similar to using a pan of watercolor.  A daub of white gouache finished the head and eye on this quick study.

The Pheasant began as a rendering using the sticks on cold press watercolor paper.  I drew the body shape, wings and tail with the Watercolor Sticks on dry paper.  Out in the field this would be a very convenient way to create a sketch that could easily be transformed into a watercolor painting at a later time.  I wet the paper and blended the color.  Example 3
Example 4

Example 4

While the paper was still wet, I created marks and texture by drawing with Burnt Umber and Sap Green.  I let the paper dry and made an orange wash with shavings from the Quinacricdone Coral and Hansa Yellow Medium in a small dishExample 4

Example 5

Example 5

I glazed the entire body with the light wash and went back into the dark areas with the sticks of Burnt Umber and French Ultramarine while the wash was still wet.  I finished the head by using the Quinacricdone Coral and Hansa Yellow Medium sticks with a brush.  Example 5.  White gouache  was applied for highlights on the face and feathers.

Pheasant by Natalie Oswald with DANIEL SMITH Watercolor Sticks

I made some unexpected, yet pleasant observations at the completion of my studies.  My water jar was nearly clear, the Watercolor Sticks still looked brand new and there was no messy palette to contend with.  My use of a paintbrush was kept to a minimum so the pigment went directly to the paper and stayed there – a convenient and economical way to achieve great results.  The new DANIEL SMITH Watercolor Sticks are a pleasure to work with and will easily find their way into my studio and travel kit.

Che Lopez demonstrating "How To" paint using the new DANIEL SMITH Watercolor Sticks

Che Lopez demonstrating "How To" paint using the new DANIEL SMITH Watercolor Sticks

Yesterday’s FREE demo at the DANIEL SMITH Seattle Store and “Hands On” Event with Che Lopez was all about the play-full, and expressive nature of the New DANIEL SMITH Extra Fine Watercolor Sticks ….very appropriate given the playful, funny and expressive presentation by Che!  Che is not your average Watercolor Artist, oooh no, Che Lopez is ALSO a US Boxing Coach , and “knocked us out” with his jokes and humorous approach to watercolor painting/drawing with the DS Watercolor Sticks.

Che began each of the two,  FREE 1 hour demos by showing us different ways of working with the new Watercolor Sticks:
  • Drawing with the Watercolor Sticks (both on dry and wet paper) TIP: use a Lyra-Orlow Graphite Holder to hold the WC Stick when it becomes short.
  • Make a point by sharpening it with a Lyra Sharpener (save the shavings).
  • Dissolve the shavings in small containers to paint with using a brush.
  • Dissolve the shavings in a spray bottle to spray the Watercolor on to Watercolor paper to add “tone”.
  • Drawing with the Watercolor Sticks, then using a brush to dissolve the line partially or totally.
  • Wiping your brush on the bottom of the Watercolor Sticks and painting directly onto the paper.
  • Mixing shavings of different colors in small containers to make secondary colors (ex: Quinacridone Coral with Hansa Yellow medium for flesh tones, and adding Quinacridone Burnt Orange for darker tones)
  • Dipping the Watercolor Stick into water and drawing with it wet.
  • Grinding the Watercolor Stick into a porcelain dish that has been lightly sprayed with water to make paste to paint with, you can mix colors this way too.

Che started his Watercolor painting/drawing using the Watercolor Sticks for a portrait of a Boxer.  Working from a photograph, Che first added tone to his Arches 300 lb Cold Press Watercolor Paper by spraying some dissolved Watercolor Stick in Hansa Yellow Medium onto the paper.  Then sketched in the face on the toned and wet Watercolor paper using his New Gamboge Watercolor Stick.  Che than began working on creating the portrait using all of the techniques outlined above.  For most of the brush work, Che used one of his favorite brushes, the Windsor Newton Regency Gold.
YouTube Preview Image
While painting/drawing, Che talked us through what he was doing and answered questions from the group.  One of the things Che told us was that working with the DS Watercolor Sticks, “takes [Che] back to my childhood and the play-fullness of drawing with crayons.”  Che said that he finds using the Watercolor Sticks to be “very spontaneous“.  Once he was nearing completion, Che said he would’ “hit it with Big, BIG color” we all laughed…great finish for a Boxing Coach / Watercolor Artist
"Hands On" portion of the FREE demo of the new DANIEL SMITH Extra Fine Watercolor Sticks with Watercolor Artist Che Lopez

"Hands On" portion of the FREE demo of the new DANIEL SMITH Extra Fine Watercolor Sticks with Watercolor Artist Che Lopez

When Che finished his portrait, it was time for the “Hands On” portion of the demo and everyone was eager to try the DANIEL SMITH Watercolor Sticks for themselves.

Thanks Che!

Annie Van Engelen demonstrating the new DANIEL SMITH ExtraFine Watercolor Sticks at a Special "Hands On" Event

Annie Van Engelen demonstrating the new DANIEL SMITH ExtraFine Watercolor Sticks at a Special "Hands On" Event

There was a time machine at the DANIEL SMITH Seattle Store yesterday when Annie Van Engelen was conducting a “Hands On” special event & demo for the new DANIEL SMITH ExtraFine Watercolor Sticks …that took everyone back to kindergarten!

The new DS Watercolor Sticks seem to bring out the playfulness in people when using them, and there was a cheerful, sense of fun when everyone began playing with the Watercolor Sticks.  People were at the tables with paper trying out the various techniques that Annie had shown and talked about at the beginning of the demo.

Annie Van Engelen handing out watercolor brushes during the "Hands On" portion introducing the new DANIEL SMITH ExtraFine Watercolor Sticks

Annie Van Engelen handing out watercolor brushes during the "Hands On" portion introducing the new DANIEL SMITH ExtraFine Watercolor Sticks

I moved around from table to table chatting with different people about what they were finding interesting about painting/drawing with the Watercolor Sticks.  They were trying out different watercolor brushes such as the Niji Waterbrush (a hit!) and on different watercolor papers like Yupo.  I saw a wide range of fun, expressive artwork that people were creating while playing around with the DANIEL SMITH ExtraFine Watercolor Sticksyep, everyone was playing like they were kids again making Art!

I invite you to stop by the DANIEL SMITH Stores to give our Watercolor Sticks a try, because right now we have them out to try.  We will also be offering them in more colors and open stock soon too!

Our new DANIEL SMITH ExtraFine Watercolor Sticks are very portable and are a great alternative solution to tube watercolor paints.  These are made with the same high quality pigments as our regular DANIEL SMITH ExtraFine Watercolors and with just enough gum Arabic to form the pigment into a solid, easy to hold, stick.

To introduce them, we have them in a 6 stick pack for $68.95.  The colors are:  Hansa Yellow Medium,  Quinacridone Coral,  Sap Green,  French Ultramarine,  Burnt Umber, and  Quinacridone Burnt Orange.

You can make very expressive lines when you “draw” with the Watercolor Sticks, then using your wet watercolor brush dissolve the line into color with your brushwork.  You can apply the Watercolor Sticks to wet or dry paper for different effects.  Wetting the end of the watercolor sticks and drawing directly onto your paper makes a different line, and you can take up color onto your watercolor brush by drawing it across the the tip of the wet Watercolor Stick.  The Watercolor Stick can be used on your palette by dissolving a bit off the tip in water from your palette’s well, and…..?

There are very likely more wonderful ways you can paint with our new Watercolor Sticks…just take some time and remember to play with your DANIEL SMITH Watercolor Sticks!

Every Day,  Express Yourself with ART….
