Our recent FREE demo at DANIEL SMITH Art Supply Store in Seattle with Mitchell Albala had a full house of Artists wanting to learn some tips from Mitchell during the demonstration, and who wanted Mitchell to sign their copy of his new Book: “Landscape Painting: Essential Concepts and Techniques for Plein Air and Studio Practice“. BTW – There is another FREE demo scheduled for April 25th, details below.

For this demo, Mitchell used a B&W photo, “Working from a B&W photo has less detraction at this stage rather than working from the color photograph”. The photo was of a house in a landscape, and Mitchell used it to demonstrate a 4 value study (with acrylic, best for quick black and white value studies) which is his exercise #2 outlined on page 64 of his book.

To begin the demo, Mitchell read a few sentences on “simplification and massing” which he discusses further on pages 57 & 58. Mitchell told us, “when you are looking at a landscape, it’s very overwhelming all the leaves, grass etc., and doing this value exercise makes you think about the values and basic shapes.” Simplification and massing are very important for landscape painting as it is with still life and figure, but even more important since there is so much detail and things competing for visual attention. This B&W exercise is very helpful in determining the important compositional elements, although Mitchell likes the word “design” better than composition because it denotes more thought and decision making by the Artist.

Mitchell Albala painting demo at DANIEL SMITH

When working Mitchell looks at the whole canvas and paints “holistically” not just from the upper left and working down, he is “trying to build the over all pattern and shape”. He is not painting the perfect house, but rather working over the entire canvas/paper. “The goal is to place shapes I can modify later”. By simplifying the shapes, you actually improve the focus of the painting. Watching Mitchell paint is like watching someone draw with the paint, rather than painting, much more dynamic. In the photo, MItchell pointed out that the road and sky are the same value (for this exercise he assigned a #2 value) so he told us he had to make a decision, he decided to keep the road a #2 value and blow the sky out to white.

Once Mitchell has the 4 values down he started to work on what he calls his “first pass”. Mitchell began to add value corrections which begin to pull out some details from the basic shapes he painted. He told us to use a big brush, because it helps to keep your shapes simple. Exercises like these are like “training” for the marathon (plein air painting) so that you are ready to paint outdoors. One of the tips Mitchell shared was; “Few landscapes do not benefit by having a telephone pole.” Telephone poles are great in landscapes, they add a strong vertical element and several leading off into the distance can add depth to the painting as they draw the eye in.

Mitchell Albala discussing his 4 value painting at the demo and answering questions

Later Mitchell asked where should he, “put the clouds [from the photo] in the painting?” In his book, Mitchell talks about how clouds can add a lot of dimension, and using the clouds in proportion and scale to force distance – always with conscious decision to add to the design.

Mitchell had a 40 minuet Question & Answer period to answer questions about what he did during the demo and on painting in general. A few items I noted were: “Remember that detail must always remain subordinate to the overall value of the painting.” “Your job as an Artist is to select what is important to the painting and what to leave out.” Mitchell also told us that he prefers to use the Fredrix Canvas because he likes the absorbency of the surface and it is ready to use. Mitchell has an entire chapter in his book on choosing a subject, just because you like the subject doesn’t mean it is good for painting, “select your subjects in the right way so it’s not a flat painting.” Mitchell also uses his computer as a tool to assist with painting , Photoshop is a good tool for “shape builders”.

Mitchell Albala signing copies of his book: "Landscape Painting" after the DANIEL SMITH demo

After the demo many of us lined up to have Mitchell sign our copies of his new book: Landscape Painting - got my copy signed! I have found it to be an excellent book (what I have had time to read!) and look forward to following along with his exercises when I have some time to paint again.

It was an excellent demonstration, Thank you Mitchell!

There will be another FREE demo with Mitchell at our Bellevue DANIEL SMITH Art Supply Store, Sunday, April 25th from 12pm to 2pm. Copies of Mitchell’s book: “Landscape Painting: Essential Concepts and Techniques for Plein Air and Studio Practice“ will be available for purchase AND he will be signing copies after the demo!

Patricia began by telling us how she began working with encaustic wax painting about 5 years ago when she was working with acrylics, different Golden Mediums and tossing “stuff” into the mix like sand and….wax. Liking the effects with waxes, she began her encaustic, artistic journey which eventually lead to writing her book. Other aspects of working with encaustics that Patricia told us she enjoys are the smell of the beeswax and the luminosity of the paints.

Patricia showed us the supplies she uses when encaustic painting and explained the whys and hows of them:

Patricia Baldwin Seggebruch encaustic paints & palette (electric skillet)

Major Tip: One of Patricia’s favorite asspects of working with encaustics is that it is the easiest, fastest medium to clean up with…you just unplug your Griddle & Skillet leaving the brushes in the melted wax to harden and ready to be melted when the Griddle & Skillet are plugged in for your next painting session!

More tips:

Encaustic medium is a mix of beeswax and damar resin, is used as an extender for the highly pigmented R&F Encaustic Paints, and can be used as a layer between colors to increase a sense of depth in the colors. The damar also makes the wax more durable, increases the melting point and allows the wax to be buffed to a shine when finished.

While you can make your own encaustic paints, Patricia perfers to not work with powdered pigments and likes R&F’s ready-to-work-with encaustic paints.

Patricia does not like working with paraffin (petroleum products) only beeswax.

Patricia prefers to work on Ampersand Claybord because it is ridged, takes the encaustic waxes well, and is Gallery ready.

Don’t use plywood or other types of glued or laminated wood since you are heating them, you don’t know what chemicals are present.

Birch wood is also great to work on.

The R&F website has a lot of helpful information, and is a great resource for learning more.

Patricia likes to work in front of an open window with a box fan turned around and blowing the fumes outdoors, keeps her cooler too, since she is working with a hot griddle, skillet and encaustic waxes.

If you like working standing up, be sure to raise the table up so that you are working at an optimal height.

Patricia’s Tips on Painting with Encaustic waxes:

Prime your painting surface with plain melted beeswax by heating the surface with the heat gun (warm wood for warm wax)

Apply a layer of wax with a soft Hake brush.

Then heats it again to make sure it is fused to the board.

Paints a layer of red encaustic, then fuses with heat gun.

Incises into the warm wax with metal tools to make marks and designs.

You can rub oil paint or oil bar into the incised patterns (be sure an use gloves!).

Then paint over with a soft brush, a layer of wax.

Keep working over the surface until you finish your piece!

Erasing:

Blow off the wax with the heat gun.

Heat the board and wipe off the board.

Sealing:

Patricia likes to buff out her finished pieces with a piece of women’s nylons. The paintings can also be cleaned this way as well.

Metal leafing:

Place metal leaf face down onto warm (not hot) wax.

Burnish the back to transfer on to the wax (you do not need adhesive – the metal leaf with stick to the warm wax).

You can apply wax over the metal leaf, but you will lose some of the metal gleam.

Metal leafing and encaustics are very traditional since gold leaf would be used in ancient paintings.

Image Transfer:

Heat up the wax surface.

Lay your copier image facedown.

Burnish it with the back of a spoon

Drizzle some water onto the paper (this helps to dissolve the paper fibers).

Burnish it again.

Peel and rub off the paper.

Then fuse the image with your heat gun.

Safety Tip:

Keep a fire extinguisher on hand because hot wax is flamable and can catch fire.

The audience was very appreciative of Patricia demonstration. For more information on how to work in encaustic paints, please consider Patricia’s excellent book: ”Encaustic Workshop: Artistic Techniques for Working with Wax“. Thank you Patricia!

Before I asked Juliette to sign my copy, I spent some time going through the book enjoying the lush oil paintings in the book. I had not had the opportunity to see the book before the launch and Juliette’s’ signing, so I am glad I did, so that I could talk to her about some of the paintings in the book.

An interesting thing that Juliette pointed out is that several of the paintings reside in private collections in the Seattle area. The cover painting of a striking woman glowing in the surrounding darkness by William McGregor Paxton is one, and as I recall, Juliette said that it was on loan to the Seattle Art Museum . I must make sure I see it in person.

While I have not had time to read more than a few pages, I have found that it is laid out in a series of Lessons within the chapters. Juliette’s written words, descriptive and eloquent, guide the reader to see what she sees in the painting she is using to illustrate an artistic point. The book does feel like a two dimensional Atelier, with Juliette as the readers’ instructor. Juliette teaches in the Classical Atelier style at the Gage Academy of Art in Seattle, so the Lessons in the book are very likely based on Lessons she uses to guide her Atelier Students.

This is a wonderful book I am going to look forward to reading, and if you have an interest in oil painting this is one you will want to add to your collection too.

Many thanks to Juliette Aristides for coming to DANIEL SMITH to launch newest book!
