 Bellevue Store: Saturday, Ann Breckon will be demonstrating how to paint Lighthouses in Watercolor.  Ann will show how she paints the sky, beach grasses, and captures the Lighthouse itself, and will focus on particular aspects that the audience is interested in.  Ann will also be teaching a Workshop on Painting Lighthouses in Watercolor on October 25th.  This FREE demo is a great preview to what Ann’s workshop would be like.

Sunday, Ronald Otto, the inventor of the Otto Watercolor Paper Strecher Bars, will be demonstrating how to use his innovative tool.  The Otto Stretchers allow for stretching watercolor paper without leaving staple holes, tape marks and preserves the deckle edge of your watercolor paper.  The watercolor paper remains flat after drying in the stretchers no matter how wet you make the paper while painting.  If you are a watercolor painter, then you really should come and see this demonstration by the inventor of this great artist tool!

Saturday, Jim Adkins will explain perspective and show diagrams of  it to help give you a greater understanding on how to use perspective when plein air painting in Watercolor.  This is an informative demo that will help with a beneficial foundation whether you paint in watercolors, acrylics, oils, draw or do printmaking.  So if perspective is a mystery to you, or if you want a better understanding of it, then this would be a good opportunity for you.

This Saturday, the Bellevue DANIEL SMITH Store will have Artist Gail Baker demonstrating Acrylic Painting: “Acrylics in the Rough“.  It’s FREE, so come by and get some great Acrylic Painting tips from Gail.

 
Sunday, there will be a very Special “Interactive Printmaking” FREE demo with Multimedia Artist Bill Ritchie pulling prints off his handmade “Halfwood Press” of a special etching he made to commemorate his DVD of Dan Smith talking, in 1977, about making etching and lithography inks and more.  The DVD will be playing while Bill pulls prints, Bill also has a 2 1/2 minuet trailer from his DVD of the 1977 interview with Daniel Smith which you can watch now.  Bill Ritchie has this posted on his website:
 
“My plan is to give a background of the DVD we made in the 1970s, then play the DVD. While it’s playing, I’ll quietly print an etching I made, titled Portrait of Daniel Smith - using ink made by Daniel Smith, Inc. and on a Halfwood Press I designed.’- Bill Ritchie”

This Saturday we are having a Special FREE Demo at the DANIEL SMITH Seattle Store and again on July 26th at the Bellevue Store with Artist Bill Ritchie. 

 
Bill Ritchie is a Multimedia Artist whose work includes working in Printmaking and Video.  In 1977 a few of his video art students, as part of an assignment, filmed Bill talking with Daniel Smith.  This “Basement Documentary” filmed by Bills’ students, shows Dan Smith talking about why he, as an Printmaking Artist, began making fine art printmaking inks which eventually grew into becoming the International Company DANIEL SMITH: Artists’ Marterials.   Bills’ video shows Dan talking about the struggle to balance making his art and starting his business, while showing Dan making a batch of etching ink, and a few years later at work as an Artist pulling prints. 
 
For this Special demo, Bill will be playing his video, “Making Etching Ink: Featuring D.G. Smith – Artist and Entrepreneur” (you can see a video trailer of the DVD on that link) during the demo while he pulls etching prints off the plate he made just for this occasion.  Bill has not pulled a print off this new plate yet, so everyone present at the start of the demo will get to see the first proof.  As Bill described it to me, it will be a bit of a “performance piece” as he will be pulling the prints off his “Halfwood Etching Press“

It’s Summer and that always means water….find out how you can paint in Watercolor, Streams/ Falls/Reflections with the FREE Susie Short demo on Saturday.  At the Bellevue DANIEL SMITH Store’s FREE demos, Susie will share (and she shares a lot of!) her tips on how to paint water with Watercolor.  A few weeks ago Susie was at the Seattle Store showing everyone her wonderful tips on painting water in watercolor, you can read the DS blog post here.

 
On Sunday, the FREE Art demo will have Allison Agostinelli showing you many cool ways you can use DANIEL SMITH Gold Gesso (part of the DANIEL SMITH World’s Best Acrylic Gesso collection of 8 colors) in your Art in her MULTI MEDIA: Watercolor on Gold Gesso demo.  Allison just did this very informative demo (read it here) at the Seattle Store and I was amazed at what Allison showed and told us about using this very versatile art material.  Here is a fyi for you, did you know that the little wooden display chair near the magazines has it’s cloth seat painted with the DANIEL SMITH Gold Gesso?

Saturday, June 13th, two FREE 1 hour Acrylic Painting demos with Dan Riley demonstrating how to paint using Golden Open Acrylic Paints.  The Golden Open Acrylic Paints were introduced last year (see this post) at DANIEL SMITH and have a much longer “Open” time to paint before drying.  Dan will share his tips on working with the Open Acrylic Paints which are a little different than regular acrylic paints.  If you haven’t seen the new Open Acrylic paints yet, then this is a great opportunity to see them in action!

Discover the fun of the NEW Golden Open Acrylics, slow drying acrylics, with Dan and Joe.  Students will learn the basics of color mixing, blending, and the use of acrylic mediums under the guidance of two master painters. Subjects to include Portrait, Figurative, Still Life and Landscapes. Bring favorite photos for problem solving your own composition.
