"Shoot to Show: Assignment Bellevue" Bellevue College Instructor Ray Pfortner's Student Photography Show at the Bellevue DANIEL SMITH Gallery

Today is the official opening for the “Shoot to Show: Assignment Bellevue” Photo Show at the Bellevue DANIEL SMITH Store Gallery!  While the show has been up for about a week or so, the official Opening is Today, February 26th, 2010 from 4pm to 7pm and runs through March 15th.

Bellevue College Photography instructor Ray Pfortner has 16 of his students showing their work for “Shoot to Show: Assignment Bellevue”.  Ray Pfortner gave to his students this assignment during October and November 2009:
***

“Assignment: document Bellevue by photographing:
    -anything inside the official boundaries
-views looking in from outside those boundaries
-views looking out from within those boundaries

In addition to practicing photographing and camera settings and polishing visual literacy, a major focus was on the ins and outs of exhibiting visual art, from signing and editioning to framing, pricing and hanging. The hope is to empower each photographer to go on to hang many more shows of their own in th future, for to sell art your art must be seen.”

So for all you Bellevue DANIEL SMITH Customers, be sure to stop by for the Opening or any time until March 15th and check it out….you are sure to recognize the subject matter in these photos!

The "Jobot" made by Bellevue Customer Donna for Joe for his Excellent Customer Service!

Yesterday I stopped by the Bellevue DANIEL SMITH Store to catch up on what’s Happening there….

Store Manager Holly White-Gehrt was excited to “show and tell” me all about the “Jobot” that Customer Donna made for sales associate Joe Bosch, for his above and beyond customer service for her.  Joe, (also a printmaker and student at DigiPen ) has a special thing for Robots, so Donna made a fabulous felt Robot for Joe, called The Jobot!

Thank you Holly, thank you Joe for such excellent customer service, and thank you Customer Donna for creating the amazing Jobot!

Eastside Association of Fine Arts - General Meeting with Bellevue DANIEL SMITH's Holly White-Gehrt & June Olson for a Demo on Golden's OPEN Acrylic Paint

Eastside Association of Fine Arts - General Meeting with Bellevue DANIEL SMITH's Holly White-Gehrt & June Olson for a Demo on Golden's OPEN Acrylic Paint

Today, April 16th, Holly White-Gehrt (mgr) and June Olson (asst mgr) from the Bellevue DANIEL SMITH Store are taking the Store-On-The-Road to the Eastside Association of Fine Arts (EAFA) General Meeting and Introduce Golden OPEN Acrylic Paints .

Holly will talk about what makes the Golden OPEN acrylic paints a great alternative to oil paint:  their much (MUCH) longer drying time or “open” time to work with, which is also great for acrylic painters who would like more time to work with their paint too.  June will be working on a painting, demonstrating the Golden OPEN Acrylic paint qualities in action at the meeting.

Of course if you are not a member of EAFA, or could not make the meeting, just drop by the Bellevue (or Seattle ) DANIEL SMITH store to get your questions answered about what makes these acrylic paints so special!

Thank you members of EAFA, and Holly & June!

Bellevue DANIEL SMITH Store's 1st "Annual Customer Invitational Art Exhibit" March/April 2009

Bellevue DANIEL SMITH Store's 1st "Annual Customer Invitational Art Exhibit" March/April 2009

I have not had the chance to go to the Bellevue DANIEL SMITH Store in a while, but I did stop by today.  I really wanted to see the Art Exhibit that was going on in the Bellevue DANIEL SMITH Gallery (which also doubles as the FREE Demo, Workshop , and Life Drawing rooms).

The Art Exhibit is the 1st “Annual Customer Invitational Art Exhibit” that opened March 13th at the Bellevue DANIEL SMITH Store with a reception.  It was great to see the all the wonderful Art up on the walls for the Art Show, and see June (Asst Mgr.) who hung the show (looks great!) as well as Melinda and Michael who were helping Customers while I was there.
The store was busy since the Spring Cleaning Sale had just started, so I did not get to catch up too much, but I did take photos of the Exhibit to share with you here…  Enjoy!

While looking through my copy of this months SEATTLE Metropolitan Magazine , and checking out their “Best of the City” lists, I found a nice surprise when I saw DANIEL SMITH listed! Under “shopping and Style” on page 109, under “Craft Supplies” (OK, that should be Artist Materials or Supplies!) there we were!

I know, and you know, that DANIEL SMITH Artists’ Materials is the BEST Art Supply Store, and it’s always nice to be recognized by others too.

The link to SEATTLE Metropolitan Magazine does not actually show the lists for their “Best of the City” , so you’ll have to pick up you own copy to check it out. When you do, remember, this July 2008 issue is their 3D edition so you will have extra fun looking at the magazine through the included 3D glasses in the issue!

Our Thanks to SEATTLE Metropolitan Magazine for the nice “pat on the back”!

Every Day,  Express Yourself with ART….

Saturday, June 21 FREE Demo at the
Bellevue DANIEL SMITH Store
Watercolor Painting: “Sea & Shore”
With Susie Short
****
Watercolor Artist Susie Short was at the DANIEL SMITH  Store in Bellevue last Saturday for one of the weekly FREE DANIEL SMITH demonstrations . Susie’s theme for the the watercolor painting demo was “Sea and Shore” to give some insight and techniques on painting the shore for the 11am demo, and the second demo at 1:45 was tips on painting waves crashing onto the shore.

Susie shared lots and lots of insights, with her amazing observations on shore landscapes and tips on how to paint them in watercolor . She showed the packed room full of watercolor enthusiasts “feathering” to get the strong horizontals of the shoreline and parallel surf, how she makes the foaming surf and spray pop from the paper, achieves the translucent effects of the waves and water as it covers the sand and rocks…and so much more! For an hour demo there was a lot of great stuff!

Working mostly with her new DANIEL SMITH Sand and Surf Watercolor Triad: Indanthrone Blue , Ultramarine Turquoise , and Goethite (Brown Ochre) Susie demonstrated the watercolor painting effects she was showing the audience…really amazing! Susie also used just a touch of DANIEL SMITH Extra Fine Watercolor, Green Gold for the light glowing through the wave just before it crashes.

***

Susie also had a painting on display that she did just a few days before when she was at the beach, it was an incredible shore landscape with dark rocks that she did with the new Sand and Surf Triad, and a touch of Quinacridone Burnt Orange which when mixed with the other three colors produced the most amazing deep, rich dark for the back-lighted rocks. This painting was the one she recreated for the 11am FREE demo.

When Susie was talking about how to paint the waves, she shared her excellent observations on how the light effects the water and how to create those effects with watercolor painting. It was also fun to watch and learn because Susie became very animated waving her hands and arms to act out the action of the wave…complete with sound effects! Susie is a very inspiring watercolor painting instructor, so be sure to come to her next DANIEL SMITH FREE Demo at the Seattle store : Saturday, July 12th at 11am and 1:45pm to see for yourself. Thank you Susie!

Susie Short also many watercolor workshops and watercolor painting videos and DVDs too! The next DANIEL SMITH Workshop is:

Sunday & Monday July 27th and 28th.
