Deborah Stachowic Acrylic Painting demo, "Figures in Abstract" at the Seattle DANIEL SMITH Store

Deborah Stachowic Acrylic Painting demo, "Figures in Abstract" at the Seattle DANIEL SMITH Store

Yesterday’s FREE demo at the Seattle DANIEL SMITH Store was with Deborah Stachowic demonstrating how she does Figures in Abstract when painting with Acylics.

Deborah also paints in Watercolor, Oils and Encaustic, and she recently did a demo on Watercolor painting; “Painting Dramatic Reds” at the Seattle Store.  With watercolor, Deborah has her paintings sketched and thought out, and are very controlled.  However, when painting in Acrylic, she finds it to be very freeing and that it allows her spontaneous side to develop.  One of the things that Deborah does that signifies the difference, is that for watercolor, she exclusively uses round brushes, and with acrylic, she uses only flat brushes….particular favorites are Hake brushes.

Working on full sheets of 140lb and 300lb cold press watercolor paper, Deborah begins with thin washes of acrylic paint to start with the very process oriented piece.  These thin washes Deborah calls “veils”, she has them dry in between steps, and she does a lot of prep work with these base layers.  As a result, she will have several paintings that she will be working on, she worked on three during the 1 hour demo.

Once she has the start of the acrylic painting, Deborah begins her layering using homemade Mylar stencils (these were the figurative elements in her paintings and she “glues” them down with Maskoid ) decorative stamps she has made from cardboard and Mylar, tape, paper collage elements and of course the acrylic paint.  The acrylic paint is both painted on with brushes, sprayed with water, blotted and manipulated to achieve many interesting and expressive effects.  This is one reason why painting in acrylic is so freeing to Deborah, as she said; “just experiment and play, go inside and just allow things to happen.”

At the end of the demo Deborah left us with this….  “Just be as creative as the process and let yourself go!”

Thank you Deborah!

Natalie Oswald demostrating both Acrylic and Oil Painting on Ampersand Gessobord at the Seattle DANIEL SMITH Store

Natalie Oswald demostrating both Acrylic and Oil Painting on Ampersand Gessobord at the Seattle DANIEL SMITH Store

Earlier this morning, Natalie Oswald demonstrated painting on Ampersand panels at the Seattle DANIEL SMITH store.  This was a single 2 hour demo from 10am to Noon.  Natalie worked with both acrylic paint and oil paint on the prepared, and ready-to-paint surfaces of Ampersand Gessobord.  The ready-to-paint surface of all the Ampersand Bord products makes it ideal to have on hand when inspriration strikes!

Natalie worked over the surface of the Gessobord in her particular style which invloves layering background acrylic paint in different colors (sometimes very bright!) often using custom stamps she has made (usually out of Safety-Kut blocks) to get a wall paper effect before painting her subject in oil

Natalie will apply washes of acrylic paint thinned with acrylic medium to tone down colors and told the audience that she has on occassion, gone back and sanded down part of the surface to expose some of the colors painted earlier.  Almost a geologic process of laying down color and sometimes exposing the ealier colors when she erodes the surface with sandpaper.

For the demo, Natalie painted two birds interacting in flight in Sepia oil paint as an underpainting for her subject.  These birds were painted on top of the background of a decoratively stamped design that Natalies had done earlier.  Later, when the sepia color has dried, Natalie will finish painting the birds in oil paint.

Natalie has found that for her, painting a decorative underpainting in acrylic on the Ampersand Gessobord helps take away the paralysis of “The Blank Page”, and her recent work has all been done this way.

For more on using Ampersand Gessobord (in oils) see the DANIEL SMITH Tutorial “How to get more out of your Painting Surface:  Oils on Gessobord” by Jennifer Phillips .

Thank you Natalie!

For everyone who works with GOLDEN Acrylics , Acrylic paint in general, and Oil paint may want to come to the Early Bird (9:30am) FREE demo at the Seattle DANIEL SMITH Store on the New GOLDEN OPEN Acrylics. GOLDEN’s very knowledgeable representative, Nina Deckert will be there to “Show and Tell” all about this new really cool product….there will be some FREE goodies (samples!) of this revolutionary new acrylic paint!

Since DANIEL SMITH will be carrying the entire line of the New OPEN Acrylics (look for them on page 42 of the new 2008-2009 Reference Catalog) Nina has been holding training sessions this week with the DANIEL SMITH store and catalog people. Nina will be offering some of the same information at this FREE demo!

What’s so new and wonderful about the new GOLDEN OPEN Acrylics? Well they have a much, much longer open time to work with. This is a totally new formula (and top secret too!) for acrylics that allows artists extended time to work with the paint…almost like an oil paint. The paint feels luscious and silky, again like an oil paint, when you apply it to your surface. The paint does not skim over as there is a humectant in the formula to attract moisture from the air helping to extend the open time. You can mix and work over the surface with blending, more like painting in oils, but with no solvents!

The new GOLDEN OPEN Acrylics clean out of brushes really well with water, and are designed to mix with GOLDEN’s Heavy Body Acrylics (and other brands including DANIEL SMITH Ultimate Acrylics ) which, depending on the amount of OPEN Acrylic mixed in will extend the working time of the mixed color. There is lots more, so come by to find out more from Nina at the Special Event this Saturday at 9:30 am! Remember there will be a cool package with 3 samples of GOLDEN OPEN Acrylic!

Thank you Nina!
